CALPIRG Voluntary Fee Referendum
Voting will take place via Tritonlink: http://tritonlink.ucsd.edu from April 9th to April 14th, and shall begin at 10:00 AM on the first day of voting and continue until 4:00 PM on the last day of voting. Any student or student organization may submit a request to the AS Election Chair to write Pro or Con statements, which shall be written in accordance with the AS Election Bylaws and Constitution. All correspondence sent to students regarding the referendum must include the phrase "VOTE AT TRITONLINK.UCSD.EDU". To be effective, the fee referendum must be approved by a simple majority of votes to approve, with no less than 20% of eligible votes cast. The referendum shall not be approved if there are more votes cast to abstain than votes cast to approve. The proposed voting criteria are in full compliance with AS Bylaws and Election Code, and UC Policy Section 90.00 Policy on the Campus Assessment of Voluntary Student Contributions to Student Governments and Registered Campus Organizations and UCSD Policies and Procedures Applying to Student Activities, Section 18.00.
Do you support the continuation of the voluntary student fee of $10 per student, per quarter collected to support CALPIRG Students (California Public Interest Research Group)? This fee will not be assessed during summer sessions.
If this referendum is approved, CALPIRG Students will continue to collect pledges via the student registration process. Only students who authorize to individually pledge such contribution will be assessed the fee. After a student opts in, the fee will be collected quarterly for the duration of the student's undergraduate enrollment at UC San Diego, unless the student affirmatively revokes the pledge by written request to CALPIRG Students or UC San Diego Student Business Services.
Statement of Conditions:
- The collection of such voluntary contributions through the University's agency for support of the programs and activities of CALPIRG Students does not constitute sponsorship or endorsement by the University.
- Execution of this referendum is contingent on a current contract between the Vice Chancellor Student Affairs and CALPIRG Students; or their designee
- If Associated Students determines a subsequent referendum is needed to gauge student support for CALPIRG Students, or, if by the end of the final billing cycle of any academic year the percent of students having pledged equals less than 10% of undergraduates registered for that academic year, a referendum regarding the continuation of this voluntary student contribution pledge system will be placed on the ballot of the next ASUCSD election held in compliance with UCSD regulations.
- Voluntary student contributions shall not be considered in determining a student's need for financial aid.

CALPIRG is a student-directed advocacy group at UCSD that has worked to protect the environment, fight poverty, make college more affordable, and promote civic engagement since 1978. CALPIRG has helped secure victories like the statewide ban on plastic bags, a $36 billion increase to federal financial aid, and convincing the city of La Jolla to ban bee-killing pesticides. CALPIRG is effective due to the voluntary pledge system, where students opt-in to a fee assessed via Student Business Services. Because of contributions from generous students, CALPIRG can hire full-time staff that work with students to run campaigns and lobby decision makers in Sacramento and Washington, DC. This referendum reaffirms the voluntary funding system, allowing CALPIRG to continue to run and win important campaigns for social change at UCSD. Student voices are pivotal to making concrete change, so it is important that organizations like CALPIRG continue to exist to engage students on issues that matter. Voting YES does not charge you the CALPIRG fee -- voting yes indicates your support for students to opt-in to the voluntary fee, ensuring CALPIRG remains at UCSD. Consequences of voting NO

VOTE NO! CALPIRG Students stands for California Public Interest Research Group (Students). By calling themselves a student group, CALPIRG, a multimillion dollar nonprofit and LOBBYING organization can collect fees from students without having to disclose its funding source. These funds can then be used for UNLIMITED lobbying and PAC contributions. At UCSD, CALPIRG students collects our money and then pays CALPIRG’s employees USING STUDENT FEES. Allowing this non-mandatory fee to be collected through the university violates the spirit of non-partisanship of a publicly funded entity. ABOUT CALPIRG

VOTE NO! CALPIRG Students will continue to be at UCSD regardless of their ability to charge their “pledge” to unsuspecting students. CALPIRG’s UNETHICAL collection of student fees NEEDS TO STOP. All other fees have STUDENT OVERSIGHT, you have no say where this money goes. VOTING NO ENSURES:
Make sure this multimillion dollar LOBBYING group does not take advantage of students. VOTE NO! |
The con statement is factually untrue. CALPIRG Students, the organization this referendum is for, is a completely separate organization from CALPIRG, the citizen group referred to in the con statement. CALPIRG Students is a nonpartisan, student-directed organization that fulfills the education and public service mission of UCSD. Don't let false statements and bad research dissuade you! Vote YES to give students the opportunity to contribute to issues they care about and make a difference in their community. VOTE YES FOR CIVIC ENGAGEMENT AND ACTIVISM AT UCSD! |
